Westergas GPS tours

"Locative Media" link the physical world to the virtual world.

Have a different experience of the Culture Park with one of the 10 GPS tours. Your mobile phone or PDA is your guide and your media machine. In this way, the whole park turns into a stage for fiction, games and documentaries.

Take a documentary stroll through the gasworks or a guided tour from the renovation architecture. Take a look at the culture makers on the site. Experience a fairy tale in the park. Play the Westergasquiz or the Westerquest game. Join in the Am I Hot Or Not photo competition...

Are you curious or inquisitive, a gamer or architecture lover? There's a GPS tour for everyone.

Where can I find it?

How does it work?

How do I take a tour?
GPS means Global Positioning System. All the tours work with this satellite system. A telephone or PDA shows exactly where you are walking. As you stroll through the park, you can see films, hear sounds, upload photographs, read and send texts.

Telephone & 7scenes
For 9 tours you use a mobile phone with GPS and internet and special application: 7scenes.


Traces
once you've finished a tour, you can take it again at home by clicking your trace alongside the relevant walk on the 7scenes website.

Loan phones
Don't you have a suitable mobile? No problem. The Westergasfabriek rents out telephones.

PDA
stands for: Personal Digital Assistant. One of the GPS tours runs on one of the small handheld computers: the Westerquest game. You can rent a PDA from the Westergasfabriek. (So you can't download it to your own phone).

So it's not yet possible on Saturday or Sunday.

*There is no cash deposit. You authorize a payment for your bank or credit card. The authorisation is returned when the phone is brought back.

Look at the industrial monuments through the eyes of the restoration architect. How can the use of materials and technology help you see when something was built and when it was adapted? What are crockets, bungs, traves and dimpled? Why are some doors made of wood and others of steel and glass?

When the Westergasfabriek was still providing gas for the city. Workers talk about hard work, danger of explosions, the stoking process, the cokes and how the gasometer really works. What do you really know about the Westergasfabriek? How much water fits in the paddling lake? What's the circumference of the Gasometer? When did the gasworks open? What's the name of the park's landscape architect? Which famous soccer players used to live on the Westergasfabriek site?

The Westergasfabriek Circle

Leave your mark at the Westergasfabriek by walking. Beginning on the same spot in the centre of the park, those who wish can follow instructions to walk in a circle. Over time this circle will be etched in the grounds of the park. A monument to celebrate the imperfection of man.
